MUSIC: M.I.A.’s “Vicki Leekx Mixtape” – NEW

I know it’s been a while, but have I got a treat for you! I’m a huge music whore….there’s really no better way to explain that. And I’m a huge fan of M.I.A. and somehow discovered the free download to her hot new Vicki Leekz Mixtape. I was a little cautious about this new music from here, seeing as how her last album left me wanting more….but this shit goes HARD. I think M.I.A. returns to her roots in creative and culturally blended beats, while dropping some electronic-pop influence. You won’t have a single second to slow down, the fast-paced 36 minute continuous track is more like a rave party but M.I.A.’s crazy compilations sound more focused (strangely enough) form the erratic, disjointed sounds of “Maya” that never seemed to mesh well. Those fans that are adventurous and computer whizzes, will have to seek out the downloadable mixtape…..I kinda stumbled upon it and don’t recall how to find it. But it’s def worth the listen!

D.I.Y. Greeting Cards

This weekend my grandmother’s in town for her 89th birthday (Go Grandma!) and in preparation for the big day I bought her this beautiful birthday card. Unfortunately, I completely forgot about my Dad’s birthday, which is only a few days away. And being the poor, but creative college student I am…I made him a card. What turned out to be a way to save money (and not have to walk the half mile to the grocery store-I’m lazy) is actually a great way to show someone special that you really care by taking the time to make a handcrafted birthday card!

So, as with everything, I went to Youtube to look up how to make an envelope! I found this amazing video (although the Christmas music wasn’t quite right for the summer) by Melangerie, a Brooklyn based design company that specializes in paper crafts. The video was easy to follow and sans an annoying spokesperson. I made both envelope and card out of scrap paper and paint. It was simple and took all of 20 minutes. Here’s the final product:

It came out so nicely that I would definitely consider doing this again. It’s a much more thrifty, fun and heartfelt alternative…and you can create your own design and message instead of those stock ones that never truly convey what you want to say!

Bethenny Frankel: A Fabulous Mess

I’m a huge fan of NYC Housewives star Bethenny Frankel and her new show “Bethenny Getting Married?” on Bravo. Maybe its her biting wit, or her take no prisoners business sense that I like about her. Maybe its her bat shit crazy-bitchy bloated-pregnant New Yorker hormonal attitude? But I’m an absolute fan of the show and Bethenny, especially pregnant, is just a funny, hot mess! Reminds me a little of my psychotic, control freak self! And there’s a new episode premiering tonight! Now that the wedding’s out the way and the honeymoon’s over….here comes baby, but of course we all know it’s a girl (If that was a spoiler, than you should really consider an Amish lifestyle from now on LOL) Awww! Can’t wait to see Bethenny freak out over motherhood!

Harajuku Barbie

My painting for the Byzantine Icon assignment. We were to choose a celebrity and render them in the style of a Byzantine Icon, with cracking and aging varnish and gold leaf. I chose Nicki Minaj now that she’s become an icon of pop culture. I hope to send it to her one day.
